Yesterday, the cowardly bombings in Brussels, targeting unarmed men, women, and children, brought back to mind unanswered questions regarding the Muslim religious, as well as government, state and community, leadership. Instead of inciting fundamentalists and extremists, Mullahs that have studied Islamic traditions (hadith), and Islamic law (fiqh), should be collectively, proactively, issuing fatwās (1) AGAINST suicide bombers, (2) AGAINST targeting unarmed men, women, and children, and (3) AGAINST people declaring, or honoring as a martyr any suicide bomber, or bomber targeting unarmed men, women, and children.
A fatwā in the Islamic faith is the term for the legal opinion or learned interpretation that the Sheikhul Islam, a qualified jurist or mufti, can give on issues pertaining to the Islamic law.
Here I would fault the entire Muslim leadership for not coming together and collectively, “peer pressure” confronting Muslim extremists, as well as “peer pressure” confronting Mullahs that are inciting the extremists with inflammatory Mosque speeches. First, the failure of the Muslim civilian, and religious leadership, to address, confront, and contain, fundamentalists and extremists, forces the rest of the world to defend itself … and the fight has become an “us against them”, “no one is ever going to win”, battle. Second, the Muslim leaderships’ failure to address, confront, and contain, fundamentalists and extremists, is a prime reason the death and destruction is continuing.
Don’t want to negotiate with terrorists? Fine! But, maybe it is time to talk and negotiate with those in a Muslim leadership position, including the Mullahs, as well as the moderate Muslim majority, to get off the couch and take care of their own internal problems.
Peace be with you
