Index Support and Resistance for Tuesday, 7/26/2016

 

  The US Federal Reserve (FED) begins its two-day FOMC meeting today amid earnings season reports, news releases, and market reactions.  The FED is searching for the elusive natural inflation rate.  Economic reports with the S&P/Case-Shiller home price data at 9 a.m., new home sales at 10 a.m., and Consumer confidence is reported at 10 a.m.  At 1 p.m., there is a $34 billion five-year note auction. 
  Earnings and Fundamentals matter.  As of Monday, 69 percent of the companies that have reported so far beat estimates.  Earnings are expected from DJIA stocks 3M (MMM), Caterpillar (CAT), DuPont (DD), McDonald’s (MCD), Verizon (VZ) and United Technologies (UTX).  Other stocks of interest, BP (BP), Eli Lilly, Freeport-McMoRan (FMC), Under Armour (UA), Valero Energy (VLO), Reynolds American and Tegna report before the bell, among others.
After the closing bell, Apple Inc. (AAPL), another DJIA and S&P 500 Index company reports earnings.   Afternoon reports are expected from Juniper Networks, Buffalo Wild Wings, Panera Bread, iRobot, Ameriprise, Anadarko Petroleum, Chubb, Citrix, Akamai, Match Group, TransUnion, U.S. Steel, and Equity Residential.

    Dow Jones 18,496.35 +3.29 (0.02%)
    S&P 500 2,171.64 +3.16 (0.15%)

    DJIA companies reporting earnings …

    3M (MMM) earned $2.08 per share for the second quarter, beating estimates by one cent a share. Revenue came in shy of Street forecasts. 3M (MMM) lowered its sales growth guidance for 2016.

    Caterpillar (CAT) heavy equipment maker, and DJIA company, beat estimates by +13 cents a share, with quarterly profit of $1.09 per share. Revenue beat forecasts, as well.

    DuPont (DD) earned an adjusted $1.24 per share for the second quarter, +14 cents a share above estimates. DuPont (DD) Revenue was also above forecasts and DD raised its full-year forecast.

    United Technologies (UTX) industrial conglomerate, and DJIA company, reported adjusted quarterly profit of $1.82 per share, +14 cents a share above estimates. Revenue also beat forecasts. United Technologies raised its full-year forecast.

    Verizon (VZ) telecommunications giant and DJIA company, beat estimates by +2 cents a share, with adjusted quarterly profit of 94 cents per share. Revenue missed forecasts.

    OTHER —-

    Texas Instruments (TI) came in +4 cents a share ahead of analysts forecasts, with quarterly profit of 76 cents per share. Texas Instruments (TI)’s revenue exceeded estimates. Texas Instruments (TI) reported strength in its automotive and communications chip segments, among others.
